Gym Turf & Rubber Flooring

Most serious gyms use both — and the two surfaces serve different purposes. Gym turf is built for functional training: sled pushes, sprint work, agility drills, plyometrics, and stretching. The padded foam backing and grass-like feel absorb impact and give athletes traction for dynamic movement. Rubber flooring is built for load: free weights, platforms, squat racks, and anywhere heavy equipment drops. It protects the subfloor, dampens sound, and handles repeated impact from weights. A typical commercial gym layout runs rubber flooring under the lifting zone and a turf lane (10–15 feet wide) alongside it for sled work and conditioning. For home gyms, rubber flooring covers most needs; add a short turf strip if you do sled or prowler work.

Gym turf pricing is driven by four main factors. Face weight is the biggest: higher face weight means more yarn per square yard, denser fiber, and a higher price — but also longer wear. Yarn type is second: nylon is more expensive than polyethylene but handles heavy traffic and cleats better over time. Color matters: custom colors (black, blue, red, gray, white, yellow) typically price higher than standard green. Finally, custom inlay work — yard lines, logos, team graphics — adds to both cost and lead time since the turf has to be cut and assembled to your spec. Sled strips are priced as complete pre-cut pieces rather than per square foot, and rubber flooring is priced separately based on thickness (6mm to 12mm) and whether you choose solid black or color-flecked. All five are padded 15'-wide turf rolls designed for indoor gyms, but they differ in face weight and yarn type. GT34 (34 oz poly) is our budget-friendly workhorse for general facility use. GT48 (48 oz poly) is the most popular indoor turf we sell — soft enough for floor work but dense enough for high-traffic areas, and it comes in the widest color selection (black, blue, red, gray, white, yellow, and green). Stadium (30 oz nylon/poly blend) is built for high-traffic functional zones. Arena (40 oz nylon) steps up to a premium feel and is a favorite for elite training facilities that want the look and performance of nylon. Elite (58 oz nylon) is our top-tier turf — heaviest face weight, best aesthetics, and the most durable option for facilities that get heavy daily use. All five use a 5mm foam pad and require no infill.

Thickness depends on what you're dropping on it. 6mm rubber is the entry level — suitable for home gyms with light dumbbells, cardio equipment, and general walkways. 8mm is our most-recommended thickness and the preferred choice for most commercial gyms; it protects the subfloor from standard free-weight use and gives a comfortable feel underfoot. 10mm and 12mm are for heavy lifting zones — Olympic platforms, deadlift areas, and CrossFit boxes where bumper plates hit the floor frequently. If you're mixing zones, a common setup is 8mm across the main floor with 12mm stall mats or a dedicated platform under the lifting area. Thickness also affects sound dampening: thicker rubber is quieter, which matters for second-floor installations or gyms sharing a wall with other tenants.

Face weight measures how many ounces of yarn are packed into a square yard of turf — higher face weight means denser fiber, a firmer feel, and longer wear. For light home gym use, 30–34 oz is sufficient. For commercial gyms and training facilities with daily traffic, 40–48 oz hits the sweet spot between price and durability; GT48 is the most popular choice in this range. For elite training facilities, college programs, and pro-level gyms where the turf sees sustained heavy use, 58 oz (our Elite turf) delivers the best feel and longest usable life. As a rule of thumb: the more traffic and the more abrasive the activities (sled work, cleats, turf shoes), the higher the face weight you want.

No — all of our padded gym turf is designed to be installed without infill. The foam backing gives the turf its cushion and grass-like feel, so there are no rubber pellets or sand to track through the gym, get into equipment, or clean up. This is one of the main reasons padded indoor turf has replaced traditional infilled turf for gym applications. The only exception is certain outdoor or stadium-style applications, but for indoor gym, CrossFit, and home gym use, no infill is required.

Gym turf is typically installed by gluing it directly to a clean, level subfloor using a urethane-based turf adhesive. For commercial installations, we strongly recommend glue-down — it prevents bubbling, shifting, and seam separation over time. For some home gym and temporary applications, double-sided carpet tape around the perimeter with seam tape at joints can work as a lighter-install option. Before installing, the turf should be unrolled and allowed to relax at room temperature (55–95°F) for at least an hour. Subfloor must be fully cured, clean, and free of contaminants.
