Designing an Indoor Baseball Facility in a Multi-Sport Complex
On Deck Sports is committed to designing, installing and supplying indoor sports facilities across the country with professional training areas for baseball, softball or a number of other sports. One facility we recently worked with is Northern Valley Sports Academy in New Jersey. Since opening in 2015, Northern Valley Sports Academy has seen great success as a training facility for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and basketball along with a fitness area. Their ability to cater to nearly every sport in the Closter, NJ area has made them a favorite in the area. We worked closely with the sports complex to bring the optimal experience for all the sports that would be played on the turf field. Northern Valley Sports Academy worked with Keith Burke at On Deck Sports to make sure this dream was possible. "When people have a baseball specific facility, they want to just do individual cages," Burke said when asked about working with the idea of a multisport facility. "What we like to do in multisport facilities is build the shell net. That covers the ceiling and outer walls for every sport. We put in internal, retractable divider nets - like shower curtains. This gives the facility the ability to close the area down for batting cages, but still have the flexibility to have a wide open field for other sports. This also protects your lights, windows and guests because you have the shell up. It is the best way to accommodate a facility doing multiple sports." We worked to create batting lanes that retracted with the "shower curtain" nets to open up the full field. In these cages, Burke made sure Northern Valley Sports Academy was stocked with the top training tools. They have the Batting Mat Pro, vinyl backdrops, ProMounds ProModel pitching mounds, The Designated Hitter and L-screens for their cages. They also needed bases and a home plate for their full-field work - all of which came from On Deck Sports. The facility was in a building with a different design than most, posing a few problems in hanging the batting cages. Burke worked with the Northern Valley Sports Academy team to come up with a plan that would bring professional batting cages into the area and not create any problems for their building. "They had an unusual truss system in this building," Burke said. "The building went up about 20 feet, but we had to keep their nets well below 15 feet. That was their biggest struggle because they wanted to be able to take advantage of the height. They were unable to do that because of that truss system." We were able to work with the building and the owners after sending the On Deck Sports project management team to the facility. Our project manager was able to work with Northern Valley Sports academy to fit the cages in while still leaving the space for the other sports to practice without any obstacles. Northern Valley Sports Academy offers training for multiple sports along with instructions from coaches at every level. They have become the preeminent indoor sports facility in the Closter, NJ area thanks to their professional, dedicated staff and their top-notch training areas.
